Erica Calluna Vulgaris (Struikheide) Mixed colors in a rattan basket with handles
High -heath colorful late summer you do with this wild beauty beautiful, symmetrical flowers, sturdy green and a slightly weathered appearance: nothing gives the late summer as much color and structure as a heather.
Green during the winter and glowing purple and pink in the late summer, that is bush. This plant is also known as Calluna, is a European classic and the perfect addition to Winterheide or Dopheide. In the open ground, these plants formed a thick, hardy carpet with a calm, authentic look. It fits perfectly with the nowadays popular feeling that green is partly partly allowed to go its own way, in weather and wind. In pots and baking, Struikheide is a robust eye -catcher with a strong shape. The plant grows in beautiful long shoots, with roof -tongue leaves and small, symmetrical flowers that together offer a lot of color.
Robust with color shrub grows a little higher and looser than Winterheide, which reinforces the purely nature appearance. The branches can reach up to a meter high, but usually they stay slightly underneath. The plant blooms in September and October. In nature the mostly purple and pink flowers provide beautiful colored slopes and heathland areas, in the garden the plant has the same effect. On a smaller scale, however, it is much better to see the beautiful contrast with the green or colorful leaf. The plant combines very beautifully with grasses and ground cover. Struikheide is also great for the drainage in the garden. The roots drain rainwater well and thus maintain the natural balance.
Perfect seasonal bloomer Struikheide is at its best before Winterheide goes into bloom. Thanks to this perfect sense of timing, this strong indigenous plant provides new color in the garden and on the terrace, when the summer bloomers are over their peak. The somewhat wild, free appearance of this fall bloomer is reinforced by putting a few together. Choose a coarse, heavy base, which also stays upright in the first autumn storm and put a number of plants together to make real impact.
Age-old survivor Struikheide occurs in the coastal areas of Western Europe, Great Britain and Ireland with a sea climate and humid conditions. This persistent type can often be found on slopes, sea gardens and verges where water can run away well.
Trivia The official name is Calluna Vulgaris. Struikheide is one of the most important suppliers of Heidehoning. Bumblebees and bees love shrub and quickly supplement their honey stock with the nectar for the winter. According to the herbal leather, honey from Struikheide would be beneficial for bladder and kidney complaints. The branches of Struikheide were often used for brooms. Calluna comes from the Greek "Callunoo" which means "cleaning".
