Mammillaria are flowering cacti, Echino is spherical with beautiful even ridges. Gymnocalycium seems to be made up of green bullets and has a funnel flower, Opuntia grows in flat discs. And Cereus grows like a column that can reach ten meters in the wild. The thorns of Cactus form their own ecosystem of Cactus. Furthermore, the plant is pleasantly self -reliant. Cacti have a large root system with which they store moisture in their roots, leaves and stems and thus largely regulate their food.

In Mexico, Cactus happens so often that the plant has even reached the national weapon, along with a snake and an eagle. Together they depict the Tenochtitlan legend.
Origin in the wild Cactus grows in Africa and Central and South America, both in cold mountains and in the tropical Caribbean. They have existed since prehistory, excavations in Mexico have shown that people then cultivated them for the fruits. Although cacti is often associated with the desert, there are only a few who can handle that extreme drought. Most grow in areas with 5-50 cm of precipitation per year. There are 1800 different species. The largest cactus in the world is the Saguaro that can reach 1 m thick and 20 meters high, and can therefore compete with a large tree.
Taking care of Cactus Cactus likes to be light and warm, and is excellent against the full sun. Giving very moderate water, rather a little too little than too much water, prevent a foot bath. The root ball may dry out, watering once a month is better than a bit every week. Add some cactus food in the summer months. The plant can best rest in the winter. Give less or no water, to survive, cactus will produce flowers (seeds). Still a spine? You can get a big out with tweezers. You remove small spines by sticking duct tape on it and pulling it away or by turning an old tights into a ball and quickly rub it over the spot. Rub the last fine spines with olive oil.
